Look. Look. Just because the store was distinctly devoid of any Valentine-themed displays, in accordance with Steph's refusal to contribute to the blatant commercialism of the holiday, that didn't mean that Steph herself wasn't occupying her every spare moment (so any that weren't helping customers, contacting suppliers, or feeding Saffron) with brainstorming newer and wilder Valentine's date ideas.

Although she was realistic enough to cross magic carpet ride off the list. Not because it was impossible, just because she didn't actually know anyone she felt she could reasonably cajole into hooking her up with a reliable magic carpet.

When Steven arrived at the Museum that morning, Blathers presented him with a small basket of preserves. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary - blueberry, strawberry, orange marmalade, that sort of thing.

The timing seemed odd as Steven couldn't think of anything that would inspire Blathers to give a gift.

Blathers said something about having the blues around this time of year, so it was something to help Steven feel cheerful.

Steven certainly enjoyed being able to say that blueberries might help the winter blues, yes, but that didn't seem to be what Blathers had had in mind.

Regardless, the jams and all looked tasty. Steven put the basket safely with his satchel so he could share it with Llewellyn later.

With that, he was behind the Welcome Desk, working away but as always interruptible for any visitors.

"I've got a role-model for you today," John decided as people began showing up. "Frank William Abagnale, Jr. is an American security consultant known for his history as a former confidence trickster, check forger, impostor, and escape artist. He became one of the most famous impostors ever, claiming to have assumed no fewer than eight identities as an airline pilot, a doctor, a U.S. Bureau of Prisons agent, and a lawyer. He escaped from police custody twice -- once from a taxiing airliner and once from a U.S. federal penitentiary -- before he was 21 years old. He served fewer than five years in prison before starting to work for the federal government. He is currently a consultant and lecturer for the FBI academy and field offices. He also runs Abagnale & Associates, a financial fraud consultancy company. Abagnale's life story provided the inspiration for the film meta for Catch Me If You Can, a Broadway musical of the same name, and a ghostwritten autobiography also of the same name."

What I did in my youth is hundreds of times easier today. Technology breeds crime. )

John leaned back against his desk, grinning. "And if that isn't the most perfect example of a con taking on a life of its own to outgrow its own mastermind, I don't know what is.

There was a projector set up in the classroom today, those of you familiar with Aphra and Isabela's classes could probably guess where this was going.

"Sometimes the best way to get your own creative juices flowing is engage with other people's creativity," Aphra started them off. "Read books, watch holos, get involved with community theatre if you're feeling masochistic."

"Since we're not, today we'll be watching a film," Isabela added. "It's a classic."

Look, they'd made it nearly halfway into the semester this time.

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, I’m here again and it’s almost warm today. Almost.

Not many notes so perhaps I will go outside and enjoy not freezing for a little while when I’m done.

At the school there were 2 classes yesterday. Raiden and his students in Feeding Yourself 101 made and ate pasta. Always a good choice. And then in Ethics Anakin and Ahsoka asked us what our favorite deadly sins are. That’s…an interesting question and I’m glad it isn’t last Wednesday right now and let’s move on.

Nothing from the dorms, sorry porg, but at least it’s almost warm outside? And I only have 1 note from the town.

Sairis was in Liliana’s shop setting things up and not being eaten by the chair. That’s good. The chair always seems hungry.

That’s all for today from yesterday.

Back in August of 2025, we announced a temporary block on account creation for users under the age of 18 from the state of Tennessee, due to the court in Netchoice's challenge to the law (which we're a part of!) refusing to prevent the law from being enforced while the lawsuit plays out. Today, I am sad to announce that we've had to add South Carolina to that list. When creating an account, you will now be asked if you're a resident of Tennessee or South Carolina. If you are, and your birthdate shows you're under 18, you won't be able to create an account.

We're very sorry to have to do this, and especially on such short notice. The reason for it: on Friday, South Carolina governor Henry McMaster signed the South Carolina Age-Appropriate Design Code Act into law, with an effective date of immediately. The law is so incredibly poorly written it took us several days to even figure out what the hell South Carolina wants us to do and whether or not we're covered by it. We're still not entirely 100% sure about the former, but in regards to the latter, we're pretty sure the fact we use Google Analytics on some site pages (for OS/platform/browser capability analysis) means we will be covered by the law. Thankfully, the law does not mandate a specific form of age verification, unlike many of the other state laws we're fighting, so we're likewise pretty sure that just stopping people under 18 from creating an account will be enough to comply without performing intrusive and privacy-invasive third-party age verification. We think. Maybe. (It's a really, really badly written law. I don't know whether they intended to write it in a way that means officers of the company can potentially be sentenced to jail time for violating it, but that's certainly one possible way to read it.)

Netchoice filed their lawsuit against SC over the law as I was working on making this change and writing this news post -- so recently it's not even showing up in RECAP yet for me to link y'all to! -- but here's the complaint as filed in the lawsuit, Netchoice v Wilson. Please note that I didn't even have to write the declaration yet (although I will be): we are cited in the complaint itself with a link to our August news post as evidence of why these laws burden small websites and create legal uncertainty that causes a chilling effect on speech. \o/

In fact, that's the victory: in December, the judge ruled in favor of Netchoice in Netchoice v Murrill, the lawsuit over Louisiana's age-verification law Act 456, finding (once again) that requiring age verification to access social media is unconstitutional. Judge deGravelles' ruling was not simply a preliminary injunction: this was a final, dispositive ruling stating clearly and unambiguously "Louisiana Revised Statutes §§51:1751–1754 violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, as incorporated by the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution", as well as awarding Netchoice their costs and attorney's fees for bringing the lawsuit. We didn't provide a declaration in that one, because Act 456, may it rot in hell, had a total registered user threshold we don't meet. That didn't stop Netchoice's lawyers from pointing out that we were forced to block service to Mississippi and restrict registration in Tennessee (pointing, again, to that news post), and Judge deGravelles found our example so compelling that we are cited twice in his ruling, thus marking the first time we've helped to get one of these laws enjoined or overturned just by existing. I think that's a new career high point for me.

I need to find an afternoon to sit down and write an update for [site community profile] dw_advocacy highlighting everything that's going on (and what stage the lawsuits are in), because folks who know there's Some Shenanigans afoot in their state keep asking us whether we're going to have to put any restrictions on their states. I'll repeat my promise to you all: we will fight every state attempt to impose mandatory age verification and deanonymization on our users as hard as we possibly can, and we will keep actions like this to the clear cases where there's no doubt that we have to take action in order to prevent liability.

In cases like SC, where the law takes immediate effect, or like TN and MS, where the district court declines to issue a temporary injunction or the district court issues a temporary injunction and the appellate court overturns it, we may need to take some steps to limit our potential liability: when that happens, we'll tell you what we're doing as fast as we possibly can. (Sometimes it takes a little while for us to figure out the exact implications of a newly passed law or run the risk assessment on a law that the courts declined to enjoin. Netchoice's lawyers are excellent, but they're Netchoice's lawyers, not ours: we have to figure out our obligations ourselves. I am so very thankful that even though we are poor in money, we are very rich in friends, and we have a wide range of people we can go to for help.)

In cases where Netchoice filed the lawsuit before the law's effective date, there's a pending motion for a preliminary injunction, the court hasn't ruled on the motion yet, and we're specifically named in the motion for preliminary injunction as a Netchoice member the law would apply to, we generally evaluate that the risk is low enough we can wait and see what the judge decides. (Right now, for instance, that's Netchoice v Jones, formerly Netchoice v Miyares, mentioned in our December news post: the judge has not yet ruled on the motion for preliminary injunction.) If the judge grants the injunction, we won't need to do anything, because the state will be prevented from enforcing the law. If the judge doesn't grant the injunction, we'll figure out what we need to do then, and we'll let you know as soon as we know.

I know it's frustrating for people to not know what's going to happen! Believe me, it's just as frustrating for us: you would not believe how much of my time is taken up by tracking all of this. I keep trying to find time to update [site community profile] dw_advocacy so people know the status of all the various lawsuits (and what actions we've taken in response), but every time I think I might have a second, something else happens like this SC law and I have to scramble to figure out what we need to do. We will continue to update [site community profile] dw_news whenever we do have to take an action that restricts any of our users, though, as soon as something happens that may make us have to take an action, and we will give you as much warning as we possibly can. It is absolutely ridiculous that we still have to have this fight, but we're going to keep fighting it for as long as we have to and as hard as we need to.

I look forward to the day we can lift the restrictions on Mississippi, Tennessee, and now South Carolina, and I apologize again to our users (and to the people who temporarily aren't able to become our users) from those states.

"They range from things that seem quite reasonable to want to try and avoid," Ahsoka added. "To others that are arguably character flaws at worst."

"Gluttony isn't that bad, or sloth," Anakin agreed. "At least compared with wrath."

"Lust isn't particularly terrible either," Ahsoka said thoughtfully. "Provided proper consent is involved."

"The less I think about and the word lust, the happier I am," Anakin admitted.

"Okay! Today we're gonna learn about..." Raiden did a little drumroll with his hands on the counter. "Pasta! Truly one of the best of the carbs. Actually, all of the carbs are good. We don't play favorites in this house. Now, pasta, or noodles, we're also not the vocab police in this house, is made from flour and water and sometimes egg, and you can make it from scratch but that's way too advanced for this class. In this class we're using the dry stuff in a box." He held up a box of spaghetti. "The different shapes of pasta have different functions and are better for different things, but who cares? Use what you like. I'm not gonna stop you.

"One of the easiest dinner options out there that's like, a real meal is to cook up some pasta and heat up some jarred pasta sauce, put some Parmesan cheese on top and ta-da! Dinner. You can also brown some meat--ground beef, ground turkey, Italian sausage, whatever you like...even probably that fake meat, I won't stop you, vegetarians. You can also throw together an actual recipe without much effort, and then feel like you accomplished something! And in the summer, you can make pasta salad however you like for a cold option. Pasta truly is a versatile king. So! We've got a bunch of handwavey ingredients and stuff; get to making some pasta how you want it."

Sairis had taken some time setting up some things in the back room over the last week, happy to finally be able to get some work done. Not that he could do much until he had money for supplies, but he'd cleared out a space, planned what to do, and started with some of the things he did have.

If anybody needed any charms, he had a few to demonstrate, at least.

Until then, he was minding the shop. He didn't really have much of an idea of how to do that, but he would manage. He made some tea and walked around, familiarizing himself with the wares.

The chair followed him around almost hopefully, and Sairis glared at it sternly. "I am not sitting in you, and you had best behave yourself if anybody shows up. This might be my first job, but I'm reasonably certain eating clients is bad for business."

The stairs were eventful today. Too eventful. Stark had planned on bringing pizza and coffee with him to the clinic but today he opted for nothing just in case otherwise parts of the island decided to go rogue and change on him while he walked.

"Sorry," he said, waving his empty hands sadly. "It just didn't seem wise to try and carry anything at all given the state of certain things out there."

He was just glad the clinic didn't have stairs. Trying to exit his apartment had been an adventure first thing and then he's gone to class and now he was here and...

"I'll bring pizza next week. And drinks."

Stabby, who had somehow built stairs inside his tank, seemed to be having a great time climbing pathway up and sliding down into the water.

The clinic was open for any possible slide related injuries. The crab was having a great time. And tyke alien was kind of over it. For the moment.

The kitten still hissed when Caleb approached, but she didn't cower or bat at him at all. And she went for her food pretty readily.

He decided to hang around a bit longer, resting his hand near with one more treat on one outstretched finger.

She was grey, with just a hint of stripes. And a dab of white on one ear.

"What's your name, I wonder."

The shelter is open for anyone who needs a kitty or doggo/pupper break.

Or possibly a ferret. Maybe even a hedgehog.

Rey hadn't had a problem going to the warehouse, but coming back, she had not been expecting the stairs to become a slide.

The shriek as she slid down, startled, was surely very badass.

Which left her at the bottom, standing to glance up at the slide that she was apparently going to have to walk up now. Maybe if she gave it a minute, it'd turn back? If not, her legs would just kill her tonortow, it was fine.

"Welcome. We have quite a bit to do today, so I will begin quickly," Hannibal said, "but I hope you won't mind. There is quite a bit to learn if you intend to work with gelatin."

He gestured at his setup. "I will be demonstrating by making panna cotta." It had previously been marshmallows in this lesson, but, well. "There are a few techniques to cover in order to make this. Dissolving the gelatin, cooking a mixture to a specific temperature, and carefully mixing different substances. Once we've completed all of that, they will have to sit for several hours in order to gel, so you will have to take them with you and eat them later. I will demonstrate that as well."

He went over the recipe carefully, demonstrating with gelatine powder and real vanilla.

"Any questions?"

ANYWAY.

I'm mostly interested in the halftime show, personally. So, let's get this done so I won't be late for anything there. Over at Caritas we had Three Minute Dates! As per usual. Liliana and Ignis discussed potential coffee based cocktails and did their usual amount of flirting. Adrian also got some flirting in while discussing appropriate clothing for the event. He was also happy to see Pam there before the discussion turned to threesomes. You know, that usually happens during the interesting weeks. Lydia helped Arden out with the cold with some magic. Which feels like cheating, honestly. Gray and Arden both bemoaned the weather as well. Belle and Arden went from the topic of drinks to the topic of book titles. Which I'm sure all makes perfect sense in context.

And then there were, of course, the dates.

After those, the bar was of course open. It looks like Rey and Stark took advantage, catching up on what the other has been up to. In non-bar news, there was also a date night for Lucifer and Octavia as it seems Duke is currently an otter. That time of the year, huh? Happened to me in December.

But that's all we have. Go have fun, folks!

Whenever he ventured outside these days he wrapped it around his waist, which still felt weird, but something must have slipped in the layers he was wearing because a chill had settled into it and it was taking a bit to warm it up.

He was trying to help it along with his hands, reminded of his childhood nervous habit of worrying it.

Then, the week after that, on Tuesday February 17th, Once More With Fandom returns after a long absence! Yep, all day, your characters - if you wish - will break out into song, original or otherwise, when emotions rise to the surface.

Enjoy!

At the school, Overcoming Obstacles watched a dog show, whilst Combat 101 learned about knives and Cupcakes of the World(s) explored the treats of Morocco.

I don't see anything from the dormitory, so we shall move on to the town, where Mr. Crocker, Miss Blake, and Mr. Morningstar enjoyed breakfast aboard the Cape Rouge before the former turned into an otter, as one does. At the Trooper Station, it seems that Detective Watts was preoccupied with something underneath his desk before being joined by Mr. Grant for luncheon. And finally, at Miss Skywalker's warehouse, she and Dean Skywalker observed the woodchucks doing a spot of ice skating, as woodchucks apparently will do.

Well, I have finished my notes, and I shall hope to see you all this evening at Caritas! Farewell!
